Use either method: scan the QR code or copy the bootstrap link into IRVIO.

The current package supports Ubuntu in two configurations: a desktop client with UI and a continuously available Server. Choose the path that matches this machine.

Download both files into the same directory. Run the following commands there; continue only if both checks succeed.

Client with UI

In a regular user’s terminal:

sudo ./install.sh --user "$USER"

The installer installs the dependencies, daemon, UI and services. After installation, log out of your user session and sign in again so the access-group membership takes effect.

Start IRVIO from the applications menu or run:

irvio

The daemon starts automatically when the UI opens. Then import the bootstrap, select a country and press CONNECT. You do not need to start the daemon manually.

Connecting also enables your node as an Exit Node: other participants can use your internet connection and reach the internet through your public IP address.

  1. IRVIO bootstrap import screen
Step 1Paste a bootstrap code or import its QR image.
  2. IRVIO country selection screen
Step 2Wait until countries become available.
  3. IRVIO list of available countries
Step 3Select the country through which you want to connect.
  4. IRVIO connected state
Step 4Press CONNECT and wait for CONNECTED.

Server without UI

sudo ./install.sh --role server --bootstrap 'irvio-bootstrap:v1:<FULL_BUNDLE>'

The installer installs the dependencies, configures and enables the service, starts the server and checks readiness. On success it prints:

IRVIO server: OK

If a problem occurs, the installer prints the reason and diagnostic commands.

Fixed external ports

  • TCP/4000 — bootstrap/libp2p.
  • UDP/3478 — STUN.
  • UDP/51820 — ICE/AWG.

The installer configures an active UFW firewall. If a firewall is enabled in the provider’s control panel, allow these ports there separately. The installer does not overwrite custom firewall rules.

These commands are intended for a new installation; the installer deliberately does not overwrite an existing manual installation.

Logs and diagnostics

The main IRVIO logs are stored in the systemd journal, not in a separate irvio.log file.

Client with UI

Show the last 100 daemon records:

sudo journalctl -u irviod.service -n 100 --no-pager

Follow the log in real time:

sudo journalctl -u irviod.service -f

Show logs from the current OS boot:

sudo journalctl -u irviod.service -b

Server

Show recent records:

sudo journalctl -u irvio-server.service -n 100 --no-pager

Follow the log in real time:

sudo journalctl -u irvio-server.service -f

Run the installed server readiness check again:

sudo /opt/irvio/scripts/check-server.sh

Where journals are stored

Depending on the journald configuration:

  • /var/log/journal/ — persistent storage.
  • /run/log/journal/ — temporary storage until reboot.

These are binary journals; read them with journalctl.

Save readable files for diagnostics:

# Client
sudo journalctl -u irviod.service -b --no-pager > irvio-client.log

# Server
sudo journalctl -u irvio-server.service -b --no-pager > irvio-server.log

These are daemon logs, not a separate GUI log. Review their contents before sharing them publicly: they may contain PeerIDs and network addresses.
